HEALTH TRIP.
EARL BEATTY HERE. NAVY LEAGUE ACTIVITIES. ARRANGEMENTS FOR VISIT. In the course of a health trip following a serious hunting accident in February of last year, Earl Beattv, son of the late Admiral of the Fleet, arrived at Auckland in the Matua yesterday accompanied by the Countess Beatty. They will spend two weeks in Xew Zealand.. Another object of the trip, which he started three months ago, is to visit branches of the Xavy League. He has been chairman of the league in England since 1937. Earl Beatty's trip took him across Canada to California, to Hawaii and then to Pago Pago, where he and the countess were entertained by the Governor of American Samoa. At Apia they were guests of the acting-Administrator of Western Samoa, Mr. A. C. Turnbull. Their next place of call was Fiji. Throughout their trip the earl and the countess have pursued their plan to get off the beaten track. Interviewed yesterday, Earl Beatty stated that he wished to remain in Auckland -long enough to see the Anniversary Day regatta. "One reason for this is that I am interested in the plan launched' by the Xavy League in Auckland for trainftig yachtsman in advanced seamanship," he said. The earl also mentioned a previous visit he had to Auckland, in 1924, when he was a midshipman in H.M.S. Danae, which was in the Im]>erial Special Service Squadron. The visitors hope also find time for some fishing at Taupo. After the Matua'& arrival Earl Beatty was met by Mr. C. H. T. Palmer, president of the Auckland branch of the Navy League, and Mr. J. H. Frater chairman. Aso present was Mr. J. Sutherland Ross, president of the Otago branch, and of this year's Dominion conference. Earl Beatty succeeded to the title on his father's death in 193t>. He retired from the Xavy in 1931 with the rank of lieutenant and entered Parliament as Unionist member for Camberwell, holding that seat until 1930. For a time he was private secretary to the Financial Secretary of the Admiralty. At pr esent he is a memjjer of the London County Council. In 1937 Earl Beatty married, his wife being American by birth. Before her marriage the countess was Mrs. Dorothy Power Sands. This morning the visitors went for a motor drive to Titirangi and other places of interest around Auckland, while this afternoon a Xavy League garden party was arranged for theui at the Ellerslie Racecourse. To-night they will dine with the Governor-General, Lord Gal way and Lady Galway, at Goverhmcnt House.
The earl will to-morrow have lunch with Commodore <T. W. Rivett-Carnac on H.M.S. Leander and dinner with the executive of the Navy League's Auckland branch. On Thursday the visitors will go to Motuihi by motor yacht. The Countess Beatty will meet woman members of the league at a morning tea arranged by Mrs. C. H. T. Palmer, at the Lyceum Club on Friday. The earl is to lunch at the Officers Club and will meet members of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in the evening. On February 3, the earl will be present at the New Zealand conference of the Navy League in Wellington. He and the countess will leave for Sydney on February 7.
