MERCER PUBLICAN CONVICTED WIFE ALSO FIXED. Ernest Bernard Morey, licensee of the Mercer Hotel, and his wife were convicted and fined at the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court yesterday by Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, foe committing breaches of the Licensing Act. i '"The defendant lias had four previous convictions for selling liquor after hours, i and it m necessary that he lie reminded of the fact that after-hour trading is not a payable proposition,"' said {Sergeant T. Kelly. Morey and hU wife were jointly charged with selling liquor after hours and supplying liquor to Francis John Fariey at a time when lie was not entitled to be supplied. Mr. A. P. King entered a plea of guilty. Constable F. T. Wakelin said that on December 10 he noticed Faricy go to the side entrance of the hotel and later to emerge with a sack containing a dozen bottles of beer. Witness saw Mr«. Morey, who admitted supplying the liquor. She said a man, on his way to the Cambridge races, had called at the hotel in the morning and placed an order for twelve bottles. She thought the man who collected the beer in the evening was the same man who ordered it. The evening caller tendered a £'_. note and had received 2/ in change. Counsel admitted there were four previous convictions against Morey, but pointed out that up to Xovember last he had gone 17 years without a conviction. At the time of the December offence the licensee was unaware ot what was taking place. On the charges of selling after hours E. B. Morey was fined £7. with costs 10/, his wife £3, with costs 10/. On other charges both were convicted • and discharged. F. J. Farley was convicted and fined £1, with costs 12/. Ralph Wood was lined £1, with costs 12/, for being found on the premises of the Railwav Hotel after houre. ' v
