WATER SHORTAGE.
RAETIHI ON RATIONS. ONLY ONE DAY'S SUPPLY. EARTHQUAKE DAMAGES PUMP. (From Our Own Correspondent.) RAKTIHI, this day. A serious position has been caused so far as Raetihi's water supply is concerned. As a result of the recent earthquake slight damage was done to one of flic valves in the water pump-hou«e. Thie allowed the chlorine and water to escape anil roach tho pump motors. As a eonsorpienoe the pump-motor blew out. Ruth motors will require to be rewound, and it i- estimated that it will be at legist a week before there is partial restoration of the service. The borough council officials to-day advised that there were approximately 100,000 gallons of water in the storage tanks on tho lull on tho northern sid° of the town. This is the quantity normally drawn off each day. The available water supply for at least seven days is restricted to the amount in tho storage tank. The borough council has been compelled to restrict tho supply of this water in storage. I'ntil further notice there will be no water supplied except during the following hours: 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., and "> p.m. to 7 p.m. The use of hoses has been prohibited, and tank owners have Im-oii
requested to co-operate with consumers who do not possess tanks. If the suggested methods of conservation a-re carried out, it is ho(>ed that a normal water supply will Win operation at the end of a week.
