STATE SUBSIDY?
BLUFF-MELBOURNE SERVICE. CONSIDERATION" SHORTIiY. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Government intends to give early consideration to the question of subsidising the Bluff-Melbourne steamer service. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, stated to-day that reports were being prepared for Cabinet, but that the matter was not finalised. "It is a financial proposition involving a good deal of money." he added, "and while lam not saving the present accommodation is fifth rate it would certainly l>e no use giving that class of service between the South Island and Melbourne and first-class facilities between Auckland ami Wellington and Sydney, because passengers would not travel via the Bluff. Therefore, the types of accommodation must be considered. We are talking about flying the Tasman and that must l»e considered too. for there is 110 question that flying is going to be the chief means of transport for the future. AVe don't want to establish a service which could l>ecoine olisolete in a few years. I make these qualifications to show it is not the simple matter some may imajrine, but the Bluff-Melbourne service will be discussed on its merits," he added.
