NO RIVALRY.
CENTENNIAL ARRANGEMENTS.
PROVINCIAL COURTS QUESTION".
"It is not a case of Auckland verms Wellington, or anything of that sort. We feel that the Centennial should be celebrated properly, and we are willing to do our proper share," said the Mr. H. A. Anderson, at a. meeting of the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening. The question of the financing of the provincial courts in Wellington for the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition was under discussion.
"Our duty is that of trustees to our ratepayers," went on Mr. Anderson. "We will have our own commitments locally. The council has already contributed £182 to the Auckland provincial committee this year, with provision for further contributions in the future."
In presenting the recommendation of the legal and finance committees, which had gone into the question, the chairman of the committee, Mr. F. B. Watts, said that the matter was a national responsibility rather than one for the ratepayers. He considered that the ratepayers of the borough would have already done their fair share without this additional burden.
The committee's recommendation that a reply be sent stating that the council believed that the financing of the provincial courts should not be the responsibility of the local bodies, and that it therefore regretted being unable to contribute to the scheme was approved by the council.
