FRENCH ACTIVITY.
SOLDIERS ON RHINE.
Government Fears New Demand by Hitler.
MAGINOT LINE MANNED
(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON", September 23. France has ordered the Rhine garrison to stand by, says a message from Nancy. French troop movements on a large scale are reported in .Alsace. Trenches are being dug in the foothills of the Vosges behind Strasbourg for auxiliaries to support the Maginot Line. Machine-guns have been established on the Rhine at bridges and along highways leading to the river. The artillery positions, six miles behind Strasbourg, have been reinforced. Reports that extra troops are occupying the Maginot Line are denied. It has been fully garrisoned for weeks. The British United Press Nancy correspondent says that soldiers in war uniforms and full equipment, including gas masks, occupied advanced posts 011 the Rhine. Horses and lorries have been requisitioned to transport troops and material. The order has been issued as the French Government fears that Herr Hitler will demand the resignation of General Sirovy's Cabinet. A full Cabinet meeting has been called for Saturday.
