LACK OF INTEREST.
N.Z.'S DEFENCE WEEDS.
(From Our Correepondent.)'
WELLINGTON, Tuesday.
At the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Defence League last night alarm was expressed at what was termed by one speaker as the hopeless state of the land force of New Zealand. The Hon. W. Perry, Dominion president of the league, deplored the lack of public interest in defence matters and urged members to greater activity in focusing public attention on the necessity for speedily increasing the Dominion's land force.
The meeting unanimously passed a motion urging the Dominion council of the league to give immediate consideration to the question of urging the Government to bring into operation a system of compulsory, universal national service for New Zealand.
