PLIGHT OF CHILDREN.
Catastrophic Proportions if Civil War Continues. CONDITIONS IN SPAIN. (Received 2 p.m.) BARCELONA, September 2. The Spanish Government promptly responded to the appeal of the Chetwode Commission and agreed to suspend all death sentences for offences prior to September 2 provided General Franco will do likewise. The Government is prepared to the utmost to facilitate the exchange of prisoners. A Burgos message says that if the civil war lasts another winter. the misery of children may be of catastrophic proportions owing to the lack of food and warmth, declares the Swedish delegate from the League of Nations Commission for assisting children. Crowds leaving amusement places at Barcelona stood in the streets and loudly cheered as Loyalist fighters in a blaze of searchlights, pursued five raiders and drove them off after they had bombed a hospital train. The rebels claim complete domination of the Loyalist offensive oil the Extremadura front.
