MUNICIPAL BAND.
QUESTION OF THE FUTURE. i RESCINDING MOTION LOST. In accordance with notice of motion, Mr. R. Armstrong moved at a meeting of the , Auckland City Council last evening recission of a previous motion that the activities of the municipal band, as at present constituted, should .be discontinued, that a sub-committee should be set up to report on the reconstruction of the band as a brass band '>n a limited subsidy basis, also on the question of subsidies to other bands. . Mr. Armstrong moved that the subcommittee should; include the. bandmaster, Mr. T. .1. O'Connor, and thru senior bandsmen, and that a reptfft should bei made with the necessary recommendations to give effcct to a proposal for the"; retention of the services of the band. Mr. J.. Sayegh said that the decision made be very much "-regretted, seeing that they had had the band for 15 years. ) Captain R. S. Jitdson pointed out that there were five other hands in the city deserving of encouragement from the council, whose conductors voluntarily gave their services. He hoped that the council would decide to give them assistance. Mr. A. Howev Walker considered that the. appreciation shown by the public did not warrant the expense. Messrs. W. K. Fee and .T. L. Coakley thought that assistance should be given to the other bands. The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, pointed out that the committee had still to deal with the matter. | The rescinding resolution was defeated.
