ART EXHIBITION.
OPENED IN AUCKLAND.
WORK OF TOM GARRETT,
An exhibition of about 30 water colours and monotypes by the Australian ]>ainter, Tom Garrett, waa opened by Mise Ellen Melville yesterday in the Auckland Society of Arts rooms. An exhibition of Mr. Garrett's work was arranged in Auckland four years ago, and art-lovers are taking the opportunity to compare exhibits. Described as a lyric painter, but difficult to classify under any school, Tom Garrett conforms in some respects to certain features of surrealism, in its original meaning. His art is internati;>na in scope, and portrays unromantic scenes with a mingling of realism and romanticism that is distinctly his own technique. Many critice. it is stated, have found in Garrett's work a freedom from commercialism that few artiste can or dare to achieve. Garrett was born in Tasmania in 11882, and after attempts to succeed in many professions found his way into art. Touches of New Zealand will be [ found in one or two of his pictures.
