TIDE PUZZLE.
FULL OUT OR FULL IN? WIND EFFECTS AT MURIWAI. Plans of an Aucklander to gather toheroas on Muriwai Beach at low water to-day were frustrated by unusual weather effects. Since the time of high tide at Muriwai was 2.36 in the afternoon, the Aucklander set out early and reached the beach at nine o'clock this morning. Normally,, with the -tide near its lowest point, the beach would have been exposed, at that time. Instead, however, the visitor wae amazed to see the breakers sweeping right up to high water .mark. Where * the tide should have been out, it seemed almost to be full in. The only explanation appeared to be that the sea wae being backed up by the force of the strong westerly wind. A Public Works Department officer stationed in the neighbourhood declared that he had never seen anything like it, and there was nothing the Aucklander could do but return home without a toheroa.
