ROOSEVELT UPSETS.
Reverses in Primary Elections In Two States. PURGE "TARGET" WINS. (Received 9.30 a.m.) COLUMBIA (S.C.), August 31. Senator Ellison D. Smith, a target of "the Roosevelt purge," defeated Roose-velt-endorsed candidate. Governor Olind Johnston, in the South Carolina primary elections. A message from San Francisco says that Senator William (Jibbs McAdoo supported by the President, is running behind Mr. Sheridan Downey, champion of the "ham and ejrjrs" and 30 dollars a week pension scheme for every Californiau over 30.
