Higher Building Costs Require Added Grants. ULTIMATE FLEET STRENGTH. WASHINGTON, August 31. After consulting President Roosevelt, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral William D. Leahy, indicated that the Navy will probably seek an additional appropriation of 200,000,000 dollars (about £40,000,000) from CongTess owing to the added cost of implementing the 1,000,000,000-dollar expansion. programme.
In an article in the "Army and Navy Journal," the Secretary for the Navy, Mr. Claude A. Swanson, reveals that the fleet will comprise 272 fighting ships totalling 1,517,480 tons, including 18 battleships, 18 heavy cruisers, 28 light cruisers, eight aircraft-carriers, 14-1 destroyers and 50 submarines.
