Of the Test batsmen D. C. S. Compton did beet, scoring 180 not out for Middlesex. W. J. Edrich, whose inclusion again is in doubt, enhanced his chances with an innings of 82. which total E. Paynter (Lancashire) also got. B. H. Valentine was the highest scorer with a great knock for Kent of "242. Another batsman to excel was F. S. Lee, the left-hander, who opens for Somerset. H» contributed a centnry in each innings. M. Leyland. who is expected to be included in England's side for the final Test, got 79. H. Verity, England's crack bowler, was in good form for Yorkshire against Gloucestershire, taking four for 40 and six for 43. ESSEX V. MIDDLESEX.
