"THE OFFICE WIFE."

PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 1.

CHIEF HOME BREAKER.

CAUSES OF DISCORD.

ADELAIDE, August 14,

While Britain is paying comfortable full-time salaries to dignitaries who have assumed the role of matrimonial conciliators, Australia is gingerly experimenting with one or two voluntary conciliators.

The South Australian official, Briga-dier-General S. Price Weir, a veteran of the Gallipoli campaign, received an honorarium of 20 guineas for his first year's work in this capacity for the Government. He has now completed a second year in the position. However, he dealt with only about six cases a month—a total of 71 for the year. But some of his comments at the end of the year created widespread interest and were cabled overseas.

He reported that an excess of either riches or poverty was liable to lead to domestic discord. Increased income due to quick promotion in business led husbands to think that they could keep another woman as well as their wives.

As Public Enemy No. 1, as far as the breaking up; of homes is concerned, he listed the "office wife," who —far from being confined to the talkies and cartoons—was described by BrigadierGeneral Weir as a menace known to, but unchecked by, the managements of several business bouses.
