FRUIT PRICES IMPROVE. iiiiimi _ m M j DEMAND FOR PEARS. GOOD VEGETABLE SUPPLIES. There was an improved demand for dessert apples to-day at the City Markets, with cookers about the same. Choice quality Cole pears were in demand, and there was a fair inquiry for Nelis. Both hothouse , tomatoes and tree tomatoes eold to a fair demand. Lemons were still in poor demand, with a fair sale only for pooiman oranges and New Zealand grapefruit. There was a good demand for I mushrooms. The Wanganella is due to-morrow with a fresh shipment of Queensland pineapples, and the Maunganui with Fiji bananas. Fruit. Apples: Delicious, 4/6 to 7/6 per case; Ballarat, 6/ to 6/6; Granny Smith, 5/ to 7/; Rome Beauty, 5/6 to 8/; Statesman, 6/ to 7/; Stunner, 5/6 to 6/6; Winesap, 6/ to 9/. Pears: P. Barry, 5/ to 6/6 per case; Winter Coles, 6/6 to 8/9; Winter Nelis, 6/ to 7/6. Tomatoes: Hothouse, 1/9 to 2/3% per lb; Tree tomatoes: New Black, 7/ to 9/6 per case; Yellow, 5/ to 7/6. Oranges: Australian, 15/ to 21/ per case; Norfolk Island, 15/. Grapefruit: New Zealand, ex choice, 4/6 to 5/ per case; others, 3/6 to 4/; Californian, 32/6. Lemons: Choice cured, 6/ to 8/ per case; others. 3/ to 4/. Bananas: Ripe, 10/3 to 18/ per case. Plums: Californian, 22/ per caee. ■ Mushrooms: About 3/3 per lb. Vegetables. The market was supplied with good quantities of cabbages and cauliflowers to-day, cauliflower realising slightly higher prices. Carrots were in heavy supply, with prices a little firmer. There was an over-supply of swedes and pumpkins, these selling at low rates. Supplies of potatoes were heavy, resulting in low prices. Celery was available in good supply, selling at recent rates. There was a heavy supply of lettuce to-day, the beet quality realising good prices. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply.of poultry was medium, and the demand 'was poor for all lines. The prices paid were much lower, cockerels being the only birds in demand. Selling rates were as follow*:— Cockerels, heavy breeds, prime, 5/ to 6/ each; not prime, 2/6 up; light breeds, prime, 2/6 to 3/ each; not prime, 1/6 up; fat roosters, heavy breeds, prime, 2/6 to 3/6 each; light breeds, 2/ to 3/ each; fat hens, heavy breeds, 3/ to 4/; light breeds, 1/9 to 2/9; pullets, heavy breeds, best, 4/6 to 6/; smaller, 2/ up; light breeds, beet, 4/ to 7/ each; smaller, 2/ to 3/; drakes, young, prime, 3/ to 4/; smaller, 2/ to 3/; ducks, young, 3/ to 4/; old, 2/ to 2/6; drakes, old, 2/ to 2/6; geese, 3/ to 5/; turkey hens, 5/6 to 7/6; gobblers, 7/ to 10/. Duck: lint grade, 1/4% per doz; B grade, 1/3%; C grade, 1/1%. Farmers' butter: 1/1 to 1/2%. Cut flowers: Flowers came forward in increased quantities to-day, especially daffodils. The demand for practically all good quality flowers remains keen. Freesias and tulips are selling at high rates.
