RATEPAYERS' MONEY.
LOCAL BODY GRANTS. MANUREWA COUNCIL VIEWS. "We have been too free in making grants of the ratepayers' money. It is not ours," said Mr. D. McNaughton at the meeting of the Manurewa Borough Council last evening, when discussing a request from the Xew Zealand Crippled Children's Society for help. The letter set out the financial position of the society. Mr. McXaxigbton eaid the levy by the Auckland Hospital Board was far too heavy. The Hospital Board should collect its fees. Hundrede of people were dodging payment and should be made to pay up. Tne Mayor, Mr. A. Fergusson, wondered * whether the national security scheme would have any effect on easing the burden of local bodies. The council deferred consideration until further information wae to hand concerning the new bill. Mr. McNaughton closed the discussion by saying he was prepared to move in the direction of rescinding the donations already granted at the last meeting and inquired of the clerk whether the cheque had gone to the Centennial Exhibition Committee. On being told it had, he 6aid, "The more's the pity," adding that there would be no hope of getting that back.
