THEFTS FROM CARS.
TWO MEN CONVICTED. WEEK'S GAOL FOR EACH. Two labourers, Noel Charles Clifford Crouch (24) and Thomas Joseph Murray (24), pleaded not guilty in the Police Court to-day when charged with the theft of a. patch outfit, bottle of car polish, putty scraper and parcel of zinc nails, of a total value of 5/9, the property of Albert Wetherill, on August 13. After several witnesses, including the arresting constabje* had given evidence, the magistrate, Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S:M., convicted both men. Both accused had been in trouble before, said Sub-Inspector Fox. Crouch had three times been in Borstal. The Probation Officer, Mr. J. Anderson, said Crouch, since his release, had not been reporting himself regularly, and at present his recall to the institution was under consideration. "The Department is prepared to give him another chance if he will report regularly," added Mr. Anderson.
"These two young men have been going round purloining things from motor cars," said the magistrate. "What they want is punishment to show them that they can't go on with this sort of business."
Each was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment.
