ORAKEI NEEDS.
NEW STATE SUBURB. MUNICIPAL AMENITIES. RESERVE AND LIBRARY. Several matters in connection with the Orakei suburb came before the Auckland City Council last evening. In reply to a request by the Orakei State Residents' Association, seeking municipal amenities, the parks committee recommended that no action should be taken at the present time in connection with a request for playing areas, but expressed the opinion that the matter should be carefully considered when the town planning scheme for the city is being finalised.
jn connection with an Orakei request for the erection of a social hall anil library the library committee reported that a library had already been established at the new Orakei School, but it was the desire of the committee, when funds ]>ermittcd. to extend the facilities to provide for adults in the building, provided that the Education Board agreed to the proposal and that a resident would act as honorary librarian.
11l a report the city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, said, inter alia, that the original scheme for the lay-out of Orakei jrarden suburb provided for a large recreation ground on the site now occupied by the native settlement. That was the proper place for a reserve, but possession of the land had not yet been obtained. Any. consideration of recreational facilities at Orakei involved the whole question of the city's recreational system. He considered. that many of the older and more thickly populated parts of the city shoiwld receive prior consideration. Further, there was no money in the current year's estimates for provision of reserves at -Orakei.
The reports of the committees were adopted.
