NEW SCHOOLS.

BUILDING SCHEME.

AUCKLAND DISTRICT. EDUCATION BOARD RECORD. TENDENCY TO CONSOLIDATE. What must rank as the most extensive building programme ever undartaken by an education board in New Zealand is at present in progress in ths AeckianS province. Several weeks ago the "Star" gave details of the proposals involving city schools, and the announcement to day of the colossal programme in tue rural districts indicates a remarkable forward move in all branches of educational activity. The total expenditure will probably

be in the vicinity of £200,000.

Six new liigh school buildings are included, the majority being erected on new ?itee, while there are 22 new schools. The trend towards consolidation is revealed in the construction of four new buildings to house such schools, while in several districts extensive alteration* and additions are being made for the same purpose. New infant buildings total eix, and primary departments four, while at three centres new accommodation for manual training is bein* provided. Another interesting trend is indicated in the fact that five new intermediate schools are being built, these being at Dargaville, Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Matamata and Tauranga. Work' hae iilso been started on 10 new teacher*' residences and nine dental clinics.

A representative of the Auckland Education Board stated that the list published below contains reference only to the more important works. In many other schools alterations and additions were being made. He added that for a number of years building ' had been reduced to a minimum, and the time had now come when replacement* of existing schools and provision of new ones could no longer be delayed.
