FERRY LANDING.
VEHICULAR TRAFFIC.
LITTLE SHOAL BAY PLAN.
HARBOUR BOARD VIEWPOINT.
Possibility of the elimination of the present vehicular ferry landing stages at Birkenhead and Northcote, and replacement by a new landing in Little Shoal Bay, which was recently discussed by the Automobile Association (Auckland), was referred in this morning by the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board. Mr. W. B. Darlow. who pointed out that as yet the matter had not come officially before the board.
Mr. Darlow said the board had had requests in the past for duplication of the vehicular landing at Devonort. It would be a lea.sonable guess that 00 per cent of the traffic went through Devonport, that was not local traffic, and north bound. , Any vehicle that went through Devonport had to travel at least five miles further if the destination was north, compared with the vehicular route via Xorthcote or Birkenhead. Vehicular traffic was diverted to Devonport, largely owing to the fact that more vehicular trips were run there, compared with the other vehicular landings.
Mr. Darlow said that if the Harbour Board built a vehicular landing in the centre of Little Shoal Bay it would mean that the Birkenhead and Northcote Borough Councils would have to make
the necessary approaches. It would involve considerable expenditure on the part of those local bodies, although possibly in conjunction with the Main Highways Board. "However," 'eald Mr. Darlow, "it is something for the future, and when proper representations are made to the board, the matter will receive every consideration. To me it appears, in view of the steadily increasing motor traffic across the harbour, that it would be the only solution to a bridge proposal, and that, does not concern the board as a board."
