NEAR NEW GUINEA?

ORIGIN OF EARTHQUAKE,

CHRISTCHURCH, Friday.

An earthquake of submarine origin is believed to liave occurred near New Guinea at 7.55 a.m. to-day. The seismograph at the Magnetic Observatory at Christchurch recorded the first tremor, which, beginning , abruty, lasted with varying intensity for about five minutes. Eight minutes after the first tremor a second ehock, sharper, longer and much more obvious than the first, was recorded. Shocks were recorded spasmodically for two hours.
