NATIONAL PARTY CHOICE

Subject to the approval of the Dominion council of the partv, Mr. Kenneth B. Tennent, of Howick, has been chosen to contest the newly-formed Otahuhu seat as the official candidate 2,, . the ~X ew Zealand National partv. Plus will be the first essay in politics Tennent, who has a notable military record.

The choice of Mr. Tennent was made last night by a meeting of 144 delcato* representing 14 branches of the partv in the Otahuhu electorate. The dep'utvchairman of the Auckland division. Mr. J. W. Kealy, presided. Now 40 years of age, Mr. Tennent was born in Dunedin and educated at the Timaril Boys' High School. He was in sheepfarming in the McKenzie country until the Great War broke out. when he left New Zealand with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and saw service at Gallipoli and Palestine. He rose to the rank of lieutenant and was awarded the Militarv Cross.

Returning to the Dominion, he took an active part in the territorial movement and gained the command of the North Auckland Mounted Rifles, from which he resigned in 1935 with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He represented tho New Zealand forces at the jubilee celebrations of the late King (ieorge V. From the end of the war he farmed in the _ Nelson Province, and then for some time near Whangarei, whence he finally retired to live at Howick.
