HIGH TOTAL IN MARCH. MANY STATE HOUSES. Permits issued for tlie erection of new dwellings in the Dominion in tlie financial year 1937-38 totalled 4872, as compared with 3282 in the previous financial year. The peak month for last year was March, 1938, when 547 permits were issued. The total value represented by all permits issued in the larger towns in 1037-38 was £8,161.039, an increase of slightly more than 50 per cent above the total for the previous year, which was f5.433,000. In March, 1938. the value represented by building permits issued in the larjrer towns was £829.704. an increase of £182.953 above the total for February, and of £342.84(> above the figure for the previous March. It was also the lushest monthly total since July, 1929. The figures for March included 2.J1 new dwellings -under the State housing scheme.
