STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

TO HAVE A SPELL. Glenogil, who was taken to Ashburton on Saturday, contracted some internal complaint on the train journey down, and it was not possible to start her in the Cup. She is now to be put aside until the spring. I JUVENILE SHOWS PROMISE. Every Port, a two-year-old half-sister to Waterline and Fast Passage, is stated to have shown encouraging form in the Trial Stakes at Ashburton last week. She missed the jump-out and was at the rear of the "big field half a mile from home, but was not far from the placed horses at the finish. i HIS THIRD VICTORY. When M. McCarten won the Brisbane Cup recently on Spear Chief he scored hk third success in this race. Previously lie won on Trainer in 1930 and on St. Vaiorey in 1934. McCarten continues to ride with great consistency in New South Wales, and at present, with 41 wins and three deadheats, is in fourth place on the winning list. i Additions to team. The two-year-old filly Submit, by Beau Pere from Timid, has been sent to Stonyhurst, where she will commence stud life next spring. Two recent additions to H. and E. Cutts' team are Harwick, who has returned from a spell, and Dress Parade, a yearling filly by Nightmarch from Ball Dress. Uiis pair will be got ready for the new season.

INTERESTING FOALINGS. Three English mares bought by Mr. E. Steele at the last December sales served to English time have all had foals at the hlderslie btiul. l*alcon, a wcll-brod mare by Flamingo, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, from the classic winner Lannnermuir, has a colt foal to the English St. Leger winner Sandwich. Doretta, who received a good advertisement last week when her three-quarter brother Mr. Grundy won the Chester Cup, has a filly by Portlaw, and the French-bred Karlova by Clarissimus has a filly by Dark Legend. All the mares have done exceptionally well since arriving in New Zealand. ' I A GOOD PERFORMANCE. In winning over a mile at Ashburton on Saturday Soliad was responsible for an outstanding performance (states a southern writer). lhe Iliad mare was hopelessly placed htlf a mile from home, and at the straight entrance she appeared to have little chance. Vigorously ridden over the last two furlongs, she gained the ascendancy in the last few strides and won by a long neck. It was a particularly fine effort and was in keeping with her form of earlier in the season. Soliad is one likely to make a name for herself as a stayer later on She was sired by Iliad from Scotch Wit (the dam of Sohvit), by The Ace from bcottish Star, by Clanranald from Safeguard, by Maxim from Teredo, by Apremont and tracing back to Mermaid (imp.).

PROMISING TWO-YEAR-OLD.

Tohunga, one of the three purchases made by Sir Joseph B. Robinson, of Capetown, at the New Zealand national sales last year, is said to be the most promising two-year-old of the trio. He was to have made his debut at the South African Turf Club meeting at AJilnerton in March, and there was disappointment when he was not produced. Tohunga, given a Maori name, as with Sir Joseph's previous yearling purchases in the Dominion, is a bay colt by the Son-in-Law horse Posterity, and he is out of Impetuous, by Limond. Ariki, purchased at the same time as Tohunga, is an exceptionally big colt, standing well over 17 hands. By Hunting S»ng (son of Hurry On) from the Polydamon mare Crisis, thus a brother to False Scent and a half-brother to Golden Blonde, he is not likely to race before the end of the year.
