EXTERNAL MIGRATION.

FIGURES FOR THE YEAR. Arrivals from overseas during the year ended March 31 numbered 38,738, according to the "Abstract of Statistics" for the month of April. This compares with 31.670 in the previous year. For the first time in eight years arrivals exceeded departures. Included in the arrivals last year were •4341 immigrants intending permanent residence, -while New Zealanders departing permanently numbered 3997. There was thus a gain of what might lie termed permanent population of 3<14. During the year there were 12,878 arrivals classed as tourists. The "Abstract" states that the season has been a successful one, tourist arrivals constituting a record. »
