GIFT PORTRAIT FOR CITY.

A portrait of the Earl of Auckland, after whom this city was named by the first Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand, Captain Hobson, has now arrived here as t the gift of the present earl to the city. It is at the Town Hall, awaiting the decision of the City Council as to where it will be hung. It was painted by Simon Rochard m 1840, the year in which Auckland was founded, and bears the inscription: "George, Earl of Auckland, 1784-1849. At the time it was painted Lord Auckland was Governor-General of India, and had lately been granted an earldom.
