MANY TRIBUTES.

LOSS WIDELY FELT.

CITIZENS' REMEMBRANCE.

AT SCHOOL WITH MAYOR.

Tributes to tlie work of the late Mr. Mahon have been made by many sections of the community. All recall his sterling work as an educationist.

''(itizens will, I am sure, join me in

expressing deepest regret at the passing

of Mr. .Mahon, whose life's work in the cause of the educational requirements of Auckland won universal admiration," said the Mayor, Sir Finest Davis. 'Tn the interests of service to others he gave unsparingly of his undoubted talents, as succeeding generations will rememlier with gratitude his association with the cause of higher education.

"In his capacity as headmaster of, the Auckland Grammar School the late Mr. Mahon enjoyed the confidence of parents and students alike, and his name will ever be revered for his conspicuous achievements in that regard. Latterly, as president of the Auckland Universitv ( oliege Council, lie demonstrated further the high plane upon which his ideals rested, and performed for the university services which the passage of time wiil not easily erase.

I speak with feeling in this connection. because in the last 12 months I was closely associated with Mr. -Mahon in negotiations between the (Jitv Coun<«il and the University College Council. lii a personal sense I am moved 'l>v the recollection that he and I were schoolmates at the same Grammar School of which he subsequently became the head. In his profoundly regretted death Auckland has lost one of its most outstanding citizens, and I a most valued personal friend.

"To the relatives of the late Mr Mahon I extend the heartfelt svmpnthv of the corporation and citizens of Auckland. and also my own condolences, in the hope that the retention of the kindliest thoughts at this difficult time will in some small measure assuage the o-ricf of his loved one-;." °
