SUBURBAN CHESS.

PAPATOETOB CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Papatoetoe Chese Club the preeident, Mr. G. Hodge, presided over a large attendance. He stated that the membership at the end of last year's play was 29 and additional players were coming forward for the new year. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory financial position. The election of ofheere resulted an follows:—President, Mr. O. Hodge; secretary and treasurer. Mr. R. V. Closey: committee. Messrs. X. E. W. Barclay, F. Wells and (J. A. Clark; handicapper, Mr. J. M. Smith. It wae decided to maintain Thursday as the playing night. A vote of thanks was carried to Mr. U. Hodge for hie donation of two trophies for last year's play. Thanke were also extended for the donation of a trophy to Mr. J. Forrest. Trophies for last year were presented to Mr. X. E. W. Barclay, who won the handicap cup and maintained his position at the top of th* ladder.
