GLORIFIED COW YARD.

FUTURE OF NEW ZEALAND. LARGER POPULATION NEEDED. (B> Telegiaph.—Parliamentary Reporter.; WELLINGTON, this day. In his customary vigorous style the Minister of Labour, Mr. Armstrong. made the contention yesterday that increased population is essential to New Zealand's development. It would be better for everybody, he said, and particularly the secondary industries, if New Zealand had a larger population. "If New Zealand is going to become a glorified sheep run and cow yard, then it lias all the population it needs," declared Mr. Armstrong. "The tendency in every country is to have a smaller proportion employed on the land and more employed in secondary industries. New Zealand needs a balance between the primary and secondary industries. There are sufficient, iron deposits in New Zealand to supply three countries its size for 500 years. There is no country in the world where the possibility of developing the iron and steel industry is better than in New Zealand."
