Driven in his own ear to the police station by a constable who placed him under arrest for being -in a state of intoxication while in charge of the. vehicle, William Lawrence Agnew (48), a commercial traveller, pleaded guilty when he appeared in the Police Court this morning. v «

Sub-Inspector Fox said that about 6 p.m. yesterday Constable Valentine, while in Parnell Road, saw Agnew leave a hotel and walk unsteadily towards a' motor car. By the time'the constable reached the car Agnew was about to drive off. He persisted in saying, he was able to drive, but .aslte/was-in. a state of intoxication, the constable drove Agnew to the lock-upt. ■ Or. Thompson examined him at 6.40 and certified that Agnew was under the influence of alcohol to the extent rendering him incapable of driTiaghiscar."He gave no trouble, in.fact he was in"a particularly friendly mood,'' added Mr. Fox. "I saw him; myself land he was definitely intoxicated. He is a most respectable' man and' has never been fn any trouble previously."

Appearing for Agnew, Mr. K. C. Aekins said Agnew had been driving motor cars for 30 years and had neVer once been involved in an accident. In drawing attention to the fact that Agnew had not driven his car last evening, counsel asked that his license should be endorsed, but not cancelled as the case. was '* mild one. , . "Be might/ have driven if the constable had not' been soquick," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. "These men will drink when they driving. He will be dealt with .the same as the others. - The only way to stop them is to cancel their licenses." Agnew was. lined. £23 and his license wae cancelled for six months.
