MAORI WOMAN'S DEATH.
LINK WITH TE XOOTI. I (From Our Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, Tuesday. Another link with the Maori rebel chief, Te Kooti, was severed with the death at Paroa of Mrs. Mihinui Meiliana, at the age of 79 years. _ Born in the Bay of Plenty, a member of the „ Ngati Rangihori sub-tribe of the Ngatiawa. tribe, «he spent the whole of her life in these parts. Her parents were followers of Te Kooti, and as a young girl Mihinui Meihana often followed the war chief's raiding parties as one of the two nurses who usually travelled with the fighting men. When hostilities ceased she married the late Mr. Charlie Mason, who became ' a chief of his tribe, and she came to Whakatane, living here with her husband until the time of his death. Her only son, Martin, resides at Wanganui. More than 600 natives from all parts of the East Coast. Rotorua. Taupo and Tauranga attended the tangi at Paroa. The burial took place at the Paroa native cemetery.
