SUMMER GOLF.

MIDDLEMORE SUCCESS. GALLOWAY BEST "PRO." SMITH OUTSTANDINGAMATEUR. That golf can "be enjoyed on Auckland courses at this time of the year, when all the clubs have officially closed their seasons, was demonstrated at Middlemore yesterday when an open day for professionals and amateurs was held. There was a very big field, ab*ut one hundred players, many of whom were visitors and some of whom had not played on the course before, taking part. It was a typical summer's day, but a southerly wind tempered the of the sun and counteracted somewhat the great length which the dryness of the course enabled the players to get. The fairways and the

greens, though now drying up, were qmte satisfactory for this time of the year, the course was not as easy as it looked. This was borne out by the fact that only two players, W. N. Abbott and E. J. Moss, could equal the scratch score of the course, 72. The next best rounds were 73 by B. H. Menzies and T. Galloway, while P. G. Smith returned cards of 74 and 75. The professional honours for the 36-hole medal play went to T. Galloway, who robbed Moss of the lead at the close of the day. Galloway did best of the "pros" in the morning with a 7a and played a grand second at the eighteenth to get that figure with a birdie three. Galloway's tee shot was near the out-of-bounds fence on the right and he had play a sliced second to make the green. The ball broke towards the pin on landing and Galloway holed the putt. Moss after a 78 in the morning played grand golf in the afternoon, but marred his card with a five at the thirteenth. Murray disappointed with rounds 01 7o and 78. In adding to his successes this year Pax Smith (Akarana) showed that he is the best amateur in Auckland and a nne player under any conditions. In presenting the prizes Mr. E. L. Bartleet stressed that the Auckland courses could provide good golf at this time of the j year and he expressed the club's appreciation of the manner in which the amateurs

'had entered in the tournament, »Ui was really staged for the benefit at «*,, professionals.
