Butchers attended in full numbers at the West field fat stock sale to-day, but supplies were short of requirements for *he Christmas and Xew \ ear trade. As a result pikes rose, and beef, veal and mutton were dearer than last week.

Some first-class cow and heifer beef was sold, one lot of nine from Mr. J. A. Hill, Ohinewai. making from £10 to £12 15/. Choice Polled Angus cows from Xgapuke Estate, Papatoetoe, and G. Gl;wson, Karaka, brought over £11. The supply of calves was smaller than last week, and bidding was keener. Prices for all classes except unfinished and inferior recovered their recent decline. A small yarding of ox beef met with a very keen sale, and values improved by about 15/ per head. Cows and heifers also sold under spirited competition. and values improved on recent sales. Extra choice ox sold to 40/ per 1001b; choice and prime ox, 37/ to 39/; ordinary and plain, 33/ to 36/; prime young cow and heifer beef, 35/ to 38/; ordinary cow beef. 25/' to 30/. Extra heavy prime steers ranged in price from £14 10' to £15: heavy prime steers, £14 to £14 7/6: lighter prime steers, £13 7/6 to £13 15/; light prime steers. £12 to £12 15/; small and unfinished steers, £8 to £10 15'. Sheep.— Less than an average entry of sheep met with ready demand, values improving on last week's sale.
