NEW CONTROL

AUCKLAND HOSPITAL.

REPORT ON CONFERENCE.

PROPOSED STAFF CHANGES.

The Auckland Hospital Board in committee last evening, received a report from the chairman, the Rev. W. C. Wood, who, in company with Dr. E. B. Gunson, visited Wellington to confer with the Minister of Health, the Hon. P. Fraser, the Director-General of Health, Dr. M. H. Watt, and the Director of Hospitals, Dr. R. A. Shore, in connection with staff changes proposed by the board. The chairman said that the Minister and the Department were intimately acquainted with the contents of the Grey Campbell report, which was recently before the board, and had discussed some of its aspect*. The Department had expressed approval of the proposal to attach to the staff two senior medical men, one medical and one surgical, for the purpose of clinical work and medical and surgical supervision, and it was (suggested that the officers should be known as the Chief of the Medical Service, and Chief of the Surgical Service. Administrative Work. Mr. Wood added that the opinion was expressed that a large amount of the administrative work could not be satisfactorily discharged by a lay secretarv, and it waa obvions that the medical arid surgical officers could not be expected to take part in administrative work, and there would still be the supervision of departments of the hospital and other institutions. It was, therefore, suggested in order to make the control complete that there should be a third medical man, who might be known as the superintendent, and who would discharge within the hospital purely administrative functions, and exercise supervision over the whole of the scientific and medical services of the board.

The report said that there would be four controlling officials, and the secretary would be the chief executive officer, and empowered to act on the board's behalf in all matters outside those specifically stated as appertaining to the other three officials. General Principles. It was pointed out that the report had dealt with general principle*, and it was suggested that the detailed regulations be provided by by-laws. The report was received and approved, and satisfaction was expressed at the arrangements entered into with the Minister and his Department. It was decided that the board at its next meeting should take the necessary steps to call applications for the positions.
