“ NO SHORTAGE.”
DISABLED LIFTMEN.
ARBITRATION COURT CLAIM.
The hearing of a claim for a new award for the Auckland City Ckanem, Caretakers, Liftmen, Watchmen and Lift Controllers' Industrial Union of Workers was concluded this morning before Mr. Justice Hunter, Messrs. W. £. Anderson and A. W. Croskery in the Second Court of Arbitration. Evidence was given on behalf of the employers, who were represented by Mr. H. J. Bishop, and the union by Mr. J. T'urtell. Mr. Bishop pointed out that he had already addressed the Court at length and that he did not wish to sum-up.
Mr. Purtell, however, presented a lengthy summing-up in which he retraced the claims of the union. He referred particularly to a statement made on behalf of the employers that provision should be made for the employment of women attendants, as there was a shortage of disabled returned soldiers, for whom the work hod previously been reserved. Mr. Purtell put in a letter from the Returned Soldiers' Association in which he stated it was pointed out that this was contrary to fact. The union, he said, would undertake to provide aa many liftmen as the employer* deemed to be necessary. Mr. Purtell opposed the exemption of manageresses and cleaners from the provisions of the award. The union strenuouslv opposed the introduction of junior workers in residential flats. The Court reserved ita decision.
