VALUELESS CHEQUES.

ALLEGATIONS IN COURT.

FLEA OF NOT GUILTY.

Nine charges of issuing valueless cheques were, preferred against I Tan Huia Leslie Bicknell, a man with general aliases, in the Magistrate's Court this morning before Messrs. J. H. Hodge and S. Kiirtor. J.P.'s. The sum involved amounted to £90 15/6.

Among- those to whom it wae alleged cheques were issued were business men of Thames, Paeroa, Turua, Netherton and Waitakaruru.

Detective F. Brady prosecuted and the accused conducted his own defence.

<.'. Scott, of Turua, said he had cashed a cheque for £5 o/O drawn on the Commercial Bank of Australasia. Later the cheque wae returned marked "Referred to Drawer."' Witness said he cashed the cheque on representations that the accused had a 1000-acre farm at Waitakaruru.

.T. A. Jnrgensen, tailor, of Thames said lie supplied the accused with riding breeches, the terms being cash on delivery. A cheque was received and was returned marked ".Keferred to Drawer/' He hod not since been paM. D. D. Fleming, secretary of w. Fleming and Son, merchants. Paeroa, Raid the accused called on him and represented that he was the owner of a lar"e block of land at Waitakaruru. He wanted a large tractor. Later the accused asked witness to cash a cheque for £5 0/6 drawn on the Commercial Bank of Australia, Newmarket. The cheque was returned "Referred to Drawer."

The hearing- was adjourned for lunch.
