MINISTER'S ASSURANCE.
NO FEAR OF CONFLICT. (From Our Correspondent.) THAMES, Monday. The possibility of conflict between afforestation and mining interest on the Coromandel Peninsula wae referred to to-day in the course of a discussion between Mr. J. Thorn, M.P., and the Thames Chamber of Commerce. Mr. C. S. Donovan, president of the Thames School of Mines, said he had noticed that some of the areas proclaimed for afforestation were really in the auriferous belts and the position became difficult from a mining point of view. Mr. Thorn «aid he had that day received a letter from the Commissioner of State Forests, the Hon. F. Lanastone, which met the position. The Minister stated that the consideration of land for afforestation embraced the value of such land for mining purposes, and in this connection it was an established practice to consult the Mines Department. The School of Mines council could be assured that it was unlikely that valuable auriferous areas would be precluded from mining by State afforestation.
