STEEL SHORTAGE.

HIGHWAY BRIDGE DELAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

TE AWAMUTU, Saturday,

Work on the bridge over the Mangapiko Stream, just north of Te Awamutu borough, which constitutes the last link in the sealed road from Auckland southward to six miles beyond Te Awamutu, is proceeding as fast as possible, but delays have been occasioned by the difficulty of securing steel from Australia.

Inquiry made to-day brought the information that only a small consignment had arrived in the past month, and unless a much larger shipment reached Te Awamutu in the next fortnight it would not be possible to complete the bridge until February. Two shifts per day are employed on the piledriving in readiness for the steel work; the piles are driven 32ft below the normal water level. Fenders of stone are being made upstream and downstream to control the flow of water, and the road approaches are being heightened to ensure clearance well above the highest known flood level. The bridge will be double-tracked, with a footway for pedestrians.
