MAYORESS RETURNS.
FASHIONS ON CUP DAY. WELL DRESSED NEW ZEALANDERS Among the prominent Aucklanders meeting the Mayoress, Lady Davis, when she returned from Sydney by the Mariposa this morning were Pitti Sing and John, two of her famous tribe of dogs. Lady Davis leaned over the deck and gazed far down the wharf, where the King Charles spaniel Pitti Sing was scratching enthusiastically. Lady Davis is a great animal lover, but she has decided that the next time they go away thev will not take a horse with them.
Discussing the fashions seen on Melbourne Cup Day, Lady Davis said that Auckland frocking compared very favourably. At one time if you went to Australia, she explained, you were struck by the smartness of Australian women, but in New Zealand now tm? fashions are equally up-to-date and there is very little difference between the standards of the two countries. "New Zealand women, if anything," she said, "are better dressed, but that is probably because the embargo on American goods is not so high here.
"We were given a wonderful time in Australia," she said, "and everybody was very hospitable. One of the most interesting things I attended was the Lord Mayor's ball, while, of course, Cup Day was a great thrill."
