"PLAYING THE GAME.*
fßy Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A protest against the clause in the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment (No. 2) Bill dealing with racing and trotting clubs was voiced in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr. J. G. Cobbe (National, Orua) who expressed the view that the country members on the Government side would not welcome the proposal. He thought it would be wise to drop the clause as it brought the employees of these clubs under the Arbitration Act. The Minister of Mines, Mr. Webb, said there was no cause for alarm. He had discussed the question with officials of the Racing Conference and they were satisfied with the bill because they knew that it would not interfere with any club that was playing the game with the workers. Any club that did not treat its workers fairly deserved to be interfered with. Mr. Cobbe: Do you know of any club that does not play the game? ' The Minister: No. Mr. Webb said that racing officials paid casual workers a higher rate than was paid by other employers and generally speaking a day's work with a racing club was eagerly sought. The working of the totalisator required the services of specialists and the clubs were concerned that the bill might interfere with their obtaining technical labour of the type required. When they found that the bill placed them in the same category as others they had expressed pleasure.
