STATE HEROES.
KILLER-BROTHERS. "TRADITIONS UPHELD." PUNISHMENT UNLIKELY. NEW YORK. The three Garr brothers, gaoled in Shelbyville (Kentucky) for the feudkilling of Brigadier-General Henry Denhardt, the man accused of murdering their sister, beautiful Mrs. Yerna Garr Taylor, were treated like heroes. Their mail was nearly as large as a film stars. Telegraph boys delivered wires to the gaol-house in relays. Said one congratulatory wire: "You have upheld the highest traditions of the Commonwealth and of manhood." Can Meet Any Bail. The three brothers, Edward.'Roy and Jack, lolled around the barred windows of the gaol and shook hands with tobacco farmers who had ridden miles to congratulate them on obeying the unwritten laws of the lawless south and upholding the "best traditions of feud custom." None of these enthusiastic farmers had any particular grudge against Denhardt. Few bothered to consider whether or not their former LieutenantGovernor was guilty. All they cared about was that there was a feud between the Garr familv and Denhardt, and the Garr boys had done their bit. Soon the brothers will be released on bail. No matter what figure is set, they can meet it. Clannish friends have offered to raise £250,000 if necessary. Equal Shares. "The whole town is ready to chip in," yelled the crowd outside the gaol. The Garrs held high festival in the gaolhouse after they had settled their quarrel over which should pay for killing by agreeing to share the blame—or rather credit. It is a 100 to 1 bet around Shelbyille that they will escape any punishment for their crime. Even the town prosecutor has declared that he will not take the case against them.
If they are not discharged without a stain on their characters the feudsmen of Kentucky will start some more feuds.
