PHONETIC SPELLING.

FIJIAN ORDER REVOKED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SUVA, October 11. Because at the Ottawa Exhibition a young fiji official was annoyed at a visitor's conception of the pronunciation of a Fiji word the colony was upset when a decree was isstied adopting "phonetic spelling." The natives protested against the innovation, and their action was strongly supported by the European civilian population. Strong feeling prevailed, and while officialdom started to spell Fijian in the new fashion, everybody else continued in the olf , <<av. There has been a long agitation to 1 bring imek the spelling to the original manner arranged by the early missionaries. Last week, after discussion of a lengthy business paper giving all the correspondence on the subject, the Government consented to revert to the old spelling except on maps or correspondence with other Governments. So everyone is once more happy.
