TRADES TAUGHT.
CARE OF ORPHANS.
METHODS IN ENGLAND. VALUE OF MIGRATION. The opinion that there was growing willingness on the part of overseas Dominions to discuss migration, was mentioned to-day by the/ Rev. J. H. Litten, of London, principal of the National Children's Home and Orphanage, England. He arrived yesterday aiternoon by the Niagara from Vancon ver. Mr. Litten said Uie institution which he controls tares for over 4000 children. It was founded in IBt>!>. Children, were taken from babyhood, irrespective of the religious <re««d of the parents. The boys were taught trades and the girls domestic science and occupations to fit them for their lives. The average leaving age was between ltt and 17. in 1872 boys were sent to Canada, and since then several thousands had been absorbed in that Dominion. They made good settlers. Recently a small party of bovs had' been sent to Australia, and they would be further trained there to tit them for Australian conditions. So far there had been no move to send either boys or girls to New Zealand, hut while in Xew Zealand he would make inquiries into the position regarding immigration. Mr. Litten said in any case they could absorb most of the boye and girls in England, but there were some who had a preference for a life overseas. During his stay in Auckland Mr. Litten will confer with the Auckland Methodist Orphanage Board concerning a proposal to establish a large orphanage in Auckland on the cottage-group system to replace three existing Methodist orphanages. To-morrow he will meet city and suburban Methodist ministers, and then visit Methodist institutions. During the afternoon he Will be the guest of the Orphanage Hoard at a gathering at the Wesley Home.
