This information was given to-dav bv the Placement Officer in Auckland! Mr. •'. I!. Kl-bury. who said that there were Ml youths aiixioiM to become apprentices to carpenter*, and 2H who wanted to become apprentices to bricklayer*.
A communication .had been sent to all builders known to be entitled to take apprentices.
Mr. Elsbury pointed out that under the oehenio youths from 20 to 2o vears of age had to be paid £2 2/rt a "week when they started, and the Government would subsidise (lie employer to the extent of il weekly. The subsidy was reducible to 1."./ in the second year, and 10/ in the third.
Mr. TCUbury mentioned that apart from any sulwddy, 35 adult apprentice* hud heen approved for various trades in Auckland, and another .1:1 were awaitin? the approval of cither the committee or the Minister of labour. In sonic eases the young men had started work at a* high as .£.l a week.
