AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
FIRST TRACK MEETING.
FIXTURE NEXT WEDNESDAY
NEW CLUBS BEING FORMED.
On Wednesday, October 13, the Auckland Club will get under away with its first open evening track meeting at the Domain. The events will be 100 yards and a mile, shot and discus, for men. Ladies will be catered for with a 75 yards run and shot put. This meeting will give most athletes a pipe opener before Labour Day.
With the national trials for the Empire Games fixed for December 11, every training day must be made use of now. The muscles must now be kept steadily in trim, ae this season looks as if it will be a rush one.
C. P. Clegg, star javelin thrower, is this season away from Auckland. He is residing near Kaeo, North Auckland. Private advice indicates that he is training very seriously and is in excellent form.
Auckland has, in Clegg a javelin thrower well capable of passing the 200 ft mark. With Gillespie, the province is very fortunate in its throwers. Gillespie has kept very fit this winter by playing hockey and basketball. Perhaps 'both men will be able to defeat such an outstanding champion as Stan Lay this summer.
A distinct acquisition to athletics in Auckland is Mr. C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M. An old athlete, he was recently the mainstay of the Timaru Athletic Club and harriers. He gave numerous trophies and was always most keen. It was a sad day for Timaru when he moved to Auckland. It is understood that he will be continuing his interests in the sport in Auckland and will act ae referee at the Labour Day meeting.
Te Kuiti has long been a professional athletic stronghold. The fact that the huge Otorohanga meeting, held each Easter, is only a few miles away has made it easy to hold a good cash «ports meeting. This year such enthusiasts as Dr. de Castro, M. Strange, J. G. Irvine and R. Ormsby' have influenced matters and to-day there is an amateur club at Te Kuiti. Dr. de Castro when in Auckland recently stated that Te Kuiti is anxious to obtain a etrong Auckland team of track and field stare. There is every likelihood thai Piopio, not far sway from Te Kuiti on the way to New Plymouth, will also stage an amateur meeting. Next Eaeter, all going well, Auckland and provincial athletes will be able to spend a pleasant few days at Waitomo and compete at two meetings.
Morry Strange, now town clerk at Te Kuiti, was a well-known Manawatu football and athletic representative. He won a Wellington title one year. "Dick" Ormsby is the father of the boy who ran so well in junior title events at Hamilton last season. Young' Ormsby is one of the beat runners we have seen in junior distance event*
The Grammar Club will hold an indoor meeting at the school gym. to commence its season. It is a "get together" gathering and will be an ideal way of starting off operation*.
