Attempted Escapes Result in

Two Deaths.

GUARDS OPEN FIRE,

(Received 9.30 a.m.) HUXTSVILLE (Tex.), October 4. The epidemic of prison escapes is continuing. Guards at Eastham penitentiary killed two and wounded two convicts and frustrated the attempted escape of 27 of the most vicious inmates.

Two broke from their quarters by means of an improvised key and overpowered a guard and took his pistol. They compelled another guard to surrender his keys with which they released their companions, who rushed out into the vard.

A guard fired from a tower, killiim two and wounding one. Another guard wounded a fourth convict, whereupon the remainder surrendered.
