FANCY DRESS DANCE.

CHILDREN AT MANGERE

The annual children's fancy dress ball of the Mangere Kast district was held in the local hall on Friday night, under the auspices of the Mangere East School Committee, when there was a large attendance of children from all the surrounding districts. This function has now been held for a number of years, and the task of Mrs. C. S. McCallum and Mrs. A. X. Bowden, wlio acted as judges, seemed more difficult than ever. Mr. E. W. B. Caddy, headmaster of the school, and his staff, trained the children for the grand march and several community fancy dunces, which were enthusiastically * received. Individual items were given by Miss Elva Handling (highland fling aiid Irish jig), with appropriate costumes, to the music of the bagpipes. Miss Heather Robertson also gave items of tap dancing.

Before calling upon Mrs. A. K. Belcher to present tile following children with their prizes, Mr. P. G. Massey, chairman of the school committee, thanked the judges and members of the teaching staff for the work. Bouquets were then presented to the judges, members of the teaching staff, and Mrs. J. Gillies, who supplied the music.

The awards were as follow: Most original, girls, Elaine Colburn (aspidistra), Fay Slinger (washer lady); boy, Ronald Mcßeth (A.A. Man) Howard Watts (cleaner); home-made, girl, Loraine Gregory (butterfly); boy, lan Brown (Roman soldier) ; five years and under, girl, Colleen Bow (Union Jack); boy, Dale Maxwell (jockey); pairs, Chum Webb and Xaire Kemplay (Chinese) 1, the Lane children (king and queen), 2; under eight, girl, Mavis Brown (Folly); boy. Ronnie Colburn (signalman); nine and under, girl, Peggv Fisher (Spanish dancer); boy, Raymond Hannah (admiral); over nine, girl. Ray Jackson (Russian doll); boy, PeteV Grace (green archer).
