N.Z. MUSICIANS.
ITATIOIfAL UNION FORMED. At a conference of representatives of various musicians' unions throughout the Dominion in Wellington recently, it was decided to form a national union, and to proceed for a Dominion award providing for general increases in payment for musicians' services.
The change from the old order of a New Zealand Association with a Dominion award to the national organisation has been approved by members of the Auckland Musicians' Union, which will now become a branch of the latter body. Under the new scheme of things the various unions will continue to have local autonomy—entire control of their funds and local business. The New Zealand Association of Musicians was formed about 1919, and the first Dominion award covering the four main centres was obtained in 1922. The award, however, lapsed during the depression years during which compulsory conciliation and voluntary arbitration obtained.
