MANY TREMORS.
JOHANNESBURG'S 'QUAKES. OVER 950 LAST YEAR. ! JOHANNESBURG, July 20. Johannesburg had 957 earth tremors last year, an increase of 113 oyer 1935, according to the annual report of the Government mining engineer. There were 710 tremors in 1934 and 736 in 1933. "A point worthy of attention," states the report, "is the fact that, despite the increase in the number and severity of earth tremors in recent years, there has been a steady decrease in fatal accidents due to fall of rock. The death rates per 1000 for falls of rock for 1934, 1935 and 1930 were 0.88, 0.67 and 0.65 respectively, and this satisfactory result is indeed a tribute, not only to the care which is given to ensure safety in mining, but also the efficacy of the system of mining and support, which have proved themselves wholly suitable to the extensively mined areas of the Central Rand."
